Confidence is something that some people seem to exude and others, not so much. So what is confidence and why do I need it? Confidence is the strong belief in yourself, your abilities, your value and your overall self-worth. Having high self-confidence is helpful to one’s mental wellbeing, unlike arrogance and low self-esteem which can be harmful. Confidence also allows you to believe in yourself when being tested by outside forces. So how do you get more confidence? Well, we have some tips.
Body Language – In a 2012 TED Talk, social psychologist Amy Cuddy discusses how body language affects how others perceive us, but can also change how we see ourselves. She argues that we can use body language to our advantage to look more confident, even when we don’t feel it; which will then in turn cause us to feel it. There is a science behind the ‘fake it till you make it’ saying with body language and confident. If you stand or sit in a body position of ‘power’ (hands on your hips, standing up straight and making the space which your body in habits large, etc.) the testosterone and cortisol levels in your brain are actually changed, causing your to feel more powerful. TO test this out, try spending a few minutes in a power-pose and see if your body can change your mind.
Health and Fitness – Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body for so many health reasons, but it is also good for your confidence levels. No matter what shape you are in, after a workout, you release endorphins that can make you feel better about yourself. Not only that, after incorporating exercise into your routine (along with a healthy diet) you will start to see physical changes which will also change how you view yourself.
Dressing the Part – As far as professional advice, people always say ‘dress for the job you want, not the job you have’, which says something about the role clothes can affect how others perceive you, and your own attitude for success. The best advice is wear clothes that fit you properly, work in different situations, and most importantly look good. If you feel good about how you look and how others perceive you, it will boost your confident. If you need style tips, just go online. Many retail websites have a style section. Don’t discount forget the in-store sales staff. It can get overwhelming trying to figure out what pieces go together. Salespeople are there to help and can quickly mix and match for you.
Success in the Workplace – One of the best ways to build confidence is through your career. Personal achievement in a career has a great payoff. What better way to feel good than to get recognized at work for your efforts? If you don’t get rewarded at your current job or don’t love what you do, consider a job change. You don’t have to love everything about your job, but you should enjoy enough aspects to make it worthwhile. Don’t discount the importance of growth opportunity. Staying in the same position too long can lead to a stagnant career and will likely reduce your confidence.
